Summary
- OwnMins measures how you spend time during work sessions you start. It runs on your Mac.
- Your activity stays on your Mac. This covers the apps you use, the pages you visit, and your sessions, reports and rules. It is never sent to us or anyone else.
- We receive only what is needed to run the free trial and to sell and activate licenses: anonymous identifiers; your email address, when you buy; your license, your payment status and the names of your activated Macs.
- We count anonymous usage (installs, setups, sessions, trials, purchases) to see how people find and use OwnMins. You can turn this off in the app. No advertising, no cookies, no tracking pixels. We do not sell or share personal data.
1. Data that stays on your Mac
While a session runs, OwnMins records the following:
| Data | Details |
|---|---|
| Foreground app | Name and bundle identifier (for example “Xcode”, com.apple.dt.Xcode) |
| Active Chrome page | Address with query strings and fragments removed (for example https://example.com/docs), and the page title |
| Timing | Start and end time of each interval, idle and paused periods, and the reasons for them (idle, sleep, lock, interruption) |
| Your input | Session names, categories, and the rules you create |
What OwnMins never records:
- page contents, screenshots or keystrokes;
- passwords or form data;
- clipboard contents;
- incognito windows;
- time outside a session.
For idle detection, OwnMins reads only how long ago the keyboard or mouse was last used, never what was typed.
Where it’s stored:
- A local database in
~/Library/Application Support/OwnMins/. It is protected by your macOS user account and FileVault, if enabled. - License state in your login Keychain.
Deleting it: use Settings › Privacy › Delete All History, or delete the folder above. Uninstalling the app and deleting that folder removes everything.
Exporting it: Reports › Export creates a CSV file on your Mac. Where you put that file is up to you.
2. The OwnMins Connector Chrome extension
The extension tells the OwnMins app which tab is active in the focused Chrome window. It sends the page address (with the query string and fragment removed) and the page title. It does this through Chrome’s native messaging, a channel that stays on your Mac.
The extension:
- doesn’t make network requests;
- doesn’t read page contents;
- doesn’t run in incognito windows;
- stores nothing beyond its connection state.
It reports nothing when the OwnMins app isn’t installed or not connected.
The use of information received through Chrome’s APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
3. Data we receive (licensing service)
The licensing service only handles trials, purchases and activations. Activity data is never sent to it.
| When | What we receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You start the free trial | A random installation ID created by the app. An anonymous hash derived from your Mac’s hardware identifier: the app hashes it before sending, and we store only a keyed hash of that. Your app version. | Issue a 7-day trial, and stop the same Mac from restarting the trial repeatedly. |
| You buy | Your email address, the price paid, the currency, and Stripe payment and session identifiers. Card details go directly to Stripe; we never see them. | Create and deliver your license, handle refunds and disputes, help with support. |
| You activate a Mac | Your license key, a keyed hash of the installation ID, and your Mac’s name (for example “Sam’s MacBook Pro”). | Enforce the 2-Mac limit and let you see which Macs use your license. |
| About weekly, while online | Your license token and installation hash. | Check the license is still valid (for example, not refunded). |
| You ask for a lost key | Your email address. | Email your license key to the address on the purchase. |
| Every request | Your IP address. Our hosting provider processes it to deliver the request. For abuse protection we keep only a keyed hash of it in short-lived rate-limit counters, deleted after at most 2 days. | Security and abuse prevention. |
Update checks. Once a day (after you agree, and only while you allow it in Settings › About) and whenever you choose Check for Updates, the app downloads a small update list from ownmins.com, which is hosted by Vercel, Inc. The request carries the app’s name and version and your IP address, as any web request does. No activity data, license or installation ID is sent, and no system profile.
Usage statistics from the app. Unless you turn off Settings › Privacy › Share anonymous usage statistics, the app tells the licensing service when it is first launched, opened (at most once a day), finished setup and completed a session. Each event carries only its name, the app version and the installation ID; we forward it to our analytics provider under a separate anonymous ID derived from it. It never includes apps, websites, page titles, session names or times. From the licensing records above, we also count trials started, checkouts, purchases (with price and currency), activations and refunds under the same anonymous ID. No email address, license key or Mac name is sent to analytics.
Legal bases (where the GDPR applies):
- performing our contract with you (trial, license, delivery);
- our legitimate interest in preventing abuse and fraud, and in understanding, in aggregate, how people find and use OwnMins (usage statistics, which you can turn off);
- our legal obligations (tax and accounting records).
Retention:
- Purchase and license records are kept for as long as the license exists, and afterwards for as long as tax law requires (10 years).
- Trial records are kept for 2 years to prevent repeat trials.
- Activation records are kept until you deactivate a Mac, plus 1 year.
4. The website
ownmins.com counts visits and clicks on its download buttons with PostHog in cookieless mode: no cookies or browser storage are used. PostHog counts unique visitors with a hash of the IP address and browser that changes every day, and removes the IP address before storing anything. We see pages viewed, the referring site, browser and device type, and which download button was clicked. Session recording is off.
5. Service providers
| Provider | Purpose | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe, Inc. | Payment processing, refunds, disputes | Purchase and payment details (Stripe privacy policy) |
| Supabase, Inc. | Hosting of the licensing service and its database | Everything in section 3 |
| Resend, Inc. | Sending license emails | Email address and license key |
| Vercel, Inc. | Hosting the website, app downloads and the update list | IP address, browser or app version of each request (Vercel privacy policy) |
| PostHog, Inc. | Product analytics for the website and the app | Website visits (section 4) and the anonymous usage statistics in section 3 (PostHog privacy policy) |
These providers process data on our behalf under their data processing terms. Some of them process data in the United States. For personal data from the EU, the UK and Switzerland, these transfers rely on the providers’ Standard Contractual Clauses and, where a provider participates, the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
6. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- access, correct, export or delete the licensing data we hold about you;
- stop processing it, where the law allows.
To do so, write to contact@ownmins.com. Deleting license records ends the license.
Activity data isn’t held by us. You control it entirely on your Mac (section 1).
You may also complain to your data protection authority.
7. Security
- Traffic to the licensing service uses HTTPS.
- License keys are stored encrypted, and identifiers are stored as keyed hashes.
- License tokens are signed with a key that never leaves the server.
- Database tables are not reachable from the public API.
8. Children
OwnMins is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
9. Changes
We’ll update the effective date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app or by email.
